Research objectives and content - To establish an approximate frequency response method for a building that divides the structure into primary structural elements (walls, columns) and secondary elements (floor, stairs, windows, balconies). The primary structure is modelled with more detail than the secondary structure. - To relate the peak local stress or local strain energy to the ground vibration spectrum input to the structure using the model described above. To thereby present a methodology to identify the most vulnerable parts of a structure, or the most vulnerable types of construction. - Using a rapid frequency sweep test technique, to attempt to verify the above theory on small-scale models. - To make a study of the principles of interface slip.- To attempt to use these principles in designing distributed energy absorbing or isolating devices for retrofit to buildings. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) Information and technology exchange with the University of Thessaloniki, which has extensive applied experience and facilities for this work. I can offer a broad background in vibration control and prediction, and also can introduce the rapid frequency sweep test technique for model structures. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The University of Thessaloniki is a centre for earthquake protection in Greece. I am an occasional vibration consultant for Gifford & Partners, who are civil engineering consultants in earthquake protection of historic buildings (involved in TOSQA, DG XII)
