Research objectives and content An emerging consensus among geologists is that fluid released during metamorphism of the Earth's crust is focused through zones of deformed rock. The proposal objective is to investigate apparent 'cause and effect' coupling of metamorphic fluid flow and deformation, which is important because metamorphic fluids can transport heat and matter, thus influencing the thermal and mineralogical properties of the crust. The Precambrian Storsjvn-Edsbyn Deformation Zone (SEDZ), central Sweden, is an ideal 'natural laboratory', for this investigation. In the SEDZ, ductile (high temperature) deformation, associated with anomalous shifts in metamorphic grade, indicative of thermal and/or chemical exchange with metamorphic fluids, precedes brittle (low temperature) deformation, associated with magnetite, gold and graphite mineralisation. The project will be facilitated by (i) quantifying fluid fluxes from transport of relevant 'tracers' according to chromatographic theory, (ii) determining fluid composition from mineral-fluid equilibria and/or fluid inclusions by micro-Raman spectroscopy, and (iii) quantifying deformation, aided by gravity modelling using the unique centrifuge facility at U. Uppsala. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The project integrates numerical modelling of chromatographic systems, analytical isotope geochemistry, equilibrium thermodynamics, micro-Raman spectroscopy, micro-structural analysis and centrifuge gravity modelling, to provide predictive models of coupled deformation and fluid flow. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The project is collaborative with Mineral Graphite AB, Edsbyn, Sweden.
