Накратко на български
Космическото микровълново фоново излъчване се анализира чрез нови алгоритми за премахване на смущения от галактичното излъчване. Това помага за по-точно определяне на плътността на Вселената и скоростта на нейното разширяване.

Цел на проекта
Research objectives and content The main aim of the project is to develop new methods for determining power spectra and cosmological parameters from simulated Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) observations made using Very Small Array (VSA) and Planck Surveyor experiments as well as from real VSA observations. The analysis will involve the application of Maximum Likelihood and Maximum entropy methods and the development of new algorithms to determine and subtract foreground contaminants, such as Galactic emission and point sources. The CMB component will also have to be modelled for different structure formation models and cosmological parameter sets. In particular, the accuracy of power spectrum reconstructions of the VSA shall be determined. It is expected that an evaluation of the real observations should put constraints on the density of the Universe and the rate of expansion to an accuracy of better than 10 per cent. Simulations of observations with complete sets of cosmological parameters and the reconstruction thereof may help to determine the confidence levels on the parameter estimates with unprecedented rigour. Furthermore, novel techniques for the extraction of information about the gas content and bulk velocities of galaxy clusters using the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect will be developed. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The project would be a continuation and extension of the work I performed for my MPhil thesis. The proposed research would help to deepen extend my knowledge on CMB and structure formation and familiarise me with the sophisticated data analysis carried out in big international research projects and the implementation of complex numerical simulations. The algorithms and methods developed would be directly applicable to the VSA observations and also the Planck Surveyor satellite data. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
