Research objectives and content The ocean acts as a major sink for the antropogenic CO2 accumulating in the atmosphere. This project will examine the age, nature and extent of the dispersion of the Mediterranean Water and the role of that water mass has to transport carbon and in the input of anthropogenic CO2. This region has a fundamental interest because of it could have a big impact in the termohaline circulation in the North Atlantic ocean, and also in the climate change, which is probably the most urgent enviromental issue in the world today. This project will combine two orthogonal chemical tracers for such studies which is a novel approach and also the competences of the research groups involved in CFC tracer studies (SOC) and carbonic system (IIM- Vigo). Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) To Investigate the nature and extend of the dispersion of the Mediterranean Water in the North of Atlantic and the impact of the Mediterranean Overflow water in the North Atlantic in terms of global termohaline circulation. To estimate the transport of CO2 in the main water masses in the North Eastern Atlantic ocean. To combine CO2 and CFC age to investigate the input of anthropogenic CO2 in Mediterranean Water.
