Research objectives and content The aim of the project is the improvement of the geological and geostatistical methods for modelling geometry, facies changes and stacking patterns, of the siliciclastic turbidite units at the scale of hydrocarbon reservoirs. Geostatistics allows to represent and quantify spatial correlations (variograms) that are useful for the probabilistic estimate (kriging) or for more adequate simulation of the sedimentary and petrophysical heterogeneities. The development of a forecasting method of analysis of turbiditic sedimentary lithosomes is the objective of the project, in order to predict the behaviour of the sedimentological and petrophysical variables. This approach will be applied to the study of a turbidite unit of the Oligo-Miocene Piedmont basin (Northern Italy). This unit can provide a model of some hydrocarbon reservoirs under investigation by Oil Companies in the Alpine - Apenninic foredeep area. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The requested training should enable the applicant to use the proper geostatistical packages in order to manage the geological data collected after field-work. The expertise of the Staff of the Centre de Giostatistique of the Ecole des Mines de Paris will provide the necessary support for the development of the proposed research and for its application to the industrial needs. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) Many commercially exploited oil fields belong to the geological class of turbidite environment reservoirs. A better understanding of how to model these reservoirs could lead to enhanced production. This is why the Italian petroleum company is providing logistic help to support the project. As for the Centre de Giostatistique, reservoir characterization is one of the main research topics. A team of 3-4 senior researchers plus Ph-D students have been working on different aspects of this problem for almost a decade.
