Research objectives and content Proton conducting ceramics find increasing use in fuel cells and hydrogen sensors. In solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) proton conducting oxides as electrolytes may allow a lower operation temperature, which would be a great advantage. However, this is a new, and very active, field of research and the characteristics of several I promising materials are still relatively unknown. In this project, different oxides of the perovskite type structure will be fabricated and examined. The influence of structure dopant atoms on the electrical properties will be determined. Mechanisms for water uptake and proton and oxide ion conductivity will be investigated. The central part of this project, and this is a new concept, is to investigate the proton conducting process by Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) after 2H/1H isotope exchange. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) - To learn about new methods for ceramic investigation. - To be a member of another leading SOFC research group. - To expand my European research network, both at universities, research organizations and industry. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) SOFCs are being increasingly more interesting for the industry as the date of commercialization approaches. However, for a rapid commercialization of the SOFC it is central to find new materials which allow the operation temperature to be reduced.
