Research objectives and contentThe main aim of the research will be to make a comparative study between Italian and English describing first, through a conversation analytic approach, the conversational style of each language -especially aspects of turn-taking associated with timing of utterances, such as overlaps or pauses between speaking turns, and detect whether there are any differences between the two languages. The main hypothesis, in fact, is that in Italian there will be a greater tolerance than in English for overlaps and gaps (inter-turn silences) will be fewer and shorter. Secondly, I will investigate whether the differences in conversational style might result in communication problems in cross-cultural interactions. Whilst on English there are extensive studies regarding turn-taking, and a few on silence, on Italian there are not such studies, especially on ordinary conversations.
