Research objectives and contentFamily policy has not, as of yet, proved a fruitful ground for European Union harmonisation. Before further harmonisation is possible, a common jurisprudential basis for legal considerations of the family must be established. This project will examine the role of legal-theoretical paradigms in defining the family within the domestic jurisprudence of four member states, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium and Sweden. Domestic legislative and judicial definitions and constructions of the family will be considered in the light of underlying theoretical justifications of the role of law in relation to the familyThis will form the precursor to exploring the possibilities for the production of a common jurisprudential basis for the legal family which would encourage the increasing convergence of family policy within the Union.Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)The grant will allow the broadening of the researcher's knowledge of contemporary European legal theory, as well as of legal constructions of the family within several member states. It will provide the opportunity to apply pre-existing knowledge to a new area, drawing upon the researcher's background in both legal theoretical and family law research. Attachment to K.U. Brussel / European Academy of Legal Theory will provide unrivalled fast-track training from significant experts in European jurisprudence.Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
