Research objectives and contentDespite the increasing interest in Multinational Organisations (MNOs) as multidimensional/evolutionary phenomena, a unitary/valid interpretive model of MNOs' behaviour has not been reached yet. Furthermore, the study of Management Control Systems (MCSs) within MNOs is very often functionalistic, based on American research/practices, and lackingof originality. Main aim of this proposal is to overcome these problems by reconceiving the concept of the MNO and the role of MCSs. Drawing on constructivist epistemology, this proposed research will redefine MNOs as a-centred" organisations. Given such a definition, a trans-disciplinary theory of control concerning the study of the knowledge-produced within/on MNOs will be elaborated. The study will construct a "pro-scriptive" theory of MCSs (i.e. the study of actions that do not undermine MNO's survival) opposite to the "pre-scriptive" conception of conventional approaches.Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)Main training benefits are:a) combination of the Italian theoretical research with the UK empirical research;b) contacts with the scholars of the Manchester School of Accounting and Finance (MSAF) who have a high reputation in research and training;c) establishment of international links with the academic and business community.Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)The project will involve several MNOs that actively collaborate to the realisation of case studies currently being carried out at MSAF."
