Research objectives and content:Introduction: Governments are concerned with the effectiveness of health services. Health services research is carried out, usually with the involvement of doctors and other professionals, in the service setting. Doctors therefore often carry out research as part of their job. This proposal aims to improve the research skills of doctor-researchers working in rural Spain through involvement in a computer-based health promotion project.Aim and content: The aim of this study is to investigate the health information needs of patients and the applicability of public-access touch-screen health information systems.In particular:1. Doctor-researchers will review systems implemented and evaluated in the UK and assess their applicability to Spain.2. One system, Healthpoint, will be reviewed in detail, revised, and implemented as a prototype.3. Evaluation methods used in Scotland will be assessed and an evaluation study carried out in Segovia.Learning objectives for doctor-researchers:(a) to understand the use of computers for patient education(b) to gain further experience in health services research.They will benefit from involvement with leading edge health service research, and the project will develop a nucleus of doctor-researchers who will continue to carry out research in their workplace and to lead their colleagues in such research.
