Research objectives and content Not much is known, today, out the people -the vast majority of whom are women- who work as domestics and home helps. Indeed, people employed as home helps often do not perceive the activity as a real job and therefore do not present themselves as workers but merely as housewives; because of this, paid housework offers job opportunities to people emigrating to Europe from Third and Fourth World countries, including immigrants who lack regular visas or work permits. The project aims at expanding our knowledge of the identity, working conditions, and the economic and social role of domestic help and living-in domestics in Europe, focussing initially on Italy and France.Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)As regards my training, this research grant would give me the vital opportunity to expand my field of study to include the contemporary period. This would allow me to bring the body of working knowledge gained from my previous historical studies to bear on the current situation. The present project, confined to France and Italy, is envisaged as the first stage in a more ambitious medium-term plan to apply comparative techniques to provide a detailed picture of the situation in the various EC countries.Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)The project will contribute to a better knowledge of what is going on m the service labour market, which is experiencing an overall expansion with respect to industry. The project will consider a traditional service sector that can be expected to grow in the future.
