Research objectives and contentThe aim of this project is to consider how far high-technology industries give rise to European Communitity antitrust law questions which are new and limited or characteristics of those high- technology industries. The project addresses whether, in the context of these new technologies, antitrust enforcers need to adopt a new approach to certain conducts involving intellectual property. It also aims to evaluate in which way antitrust policy is complementary or rather a hostile brother" to Commission's efforts to foster technological diffusion.Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)The database which contains information on the number of patents per firms, the technological field of patents and the quality of the patent as indicated by the number of times the patent is cited by other patent applications will be constructed from the collaboration with Profs. Dr. Hagedoorn et Verspagen (both from MERIT) working on "firm performance in technology: a patent citation analysis".Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)Some interviews with firms in biotechnology and computer software industries will be undertaken in order to analyse business conduct involving intellectual property and how the type and scope of intellectual property might affect innovation and competition."
