Three dimensional Conformal Radiotherapy (3DCRT), in which the high dose volume matches as closely as possible the target volume and avoids normal tissue irradiation, has been a major theme in radiotherapy for improving the therapeutic window. More recent and advanced forms of 3DCRT are intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT). While in conventional 3DCRT geometric field shaping alone is applied IMRT uses additionally the variation of primary beam intensities to achieve a new class of conformation. Stereotactic (SRT), on the other hand, is based on a 3-D stereotactic coordinate system correlated with the patient and the treatment facility through modern imaging technology. Both IMRT and SRT deal with high dose gradients, small fields, require a high dosimetric and geometric precision, and detailed knowledge of the patient anatomy. The training site, located at the Dept. of Radiotherapy and Radiobiology, AKH Vienna, Univ. Vienna Medical School, performs research in 3DCRT since many years. In October 2000 there is even available a linear accelerator dedicated to SRT and IMRT. The training site offers the following research subjects:1. Treatment plan optimization and class solutions for(i) IMRT of prostate and cervical cancer, and(ii) extra cranial SRT of liver and lung tumors,2. Quality assurance of the treatment planning system,3. impact of multi-modality imaging on target definition,4. patient immobilization and respiration control,5. Impact of IMRT on SRT of uveal melanomas. As there is close collaboration with foreign Universities and manufacturer (as a beta test site) there is mulitcentre experience and access to dedicated high tech and state of the art equipment for advanced 3DCRT. Research fellows can participate in programs for foreign students organized by the University of Vienna. The training site welcomes motivated doctoral students of either physics or medicine.
