Накратко на български

Синтетичните молекулярни мотори се изследват, за да се разбере как движението на молекула може да промени видими свойства на един материал. Това помага да се създадат изкуствени системи, които имитират механичните процеси в живата природа.

Цел на проекта

Many important biological phenomena originate from mechanical motion at the molecular level. Examples include the transcis isomerization of double bonds that triggers the visual signal, the rotary motion of the biological motor" F1 -ATPase, and the linear motion of the actin-myosin complex which is responsible for the macroscopic contraction of muscles. This widespread use of machine-like molecular level motion in key natural processes has recently inspired chemists to make synthetic molecules which mimic some of the fundamental properties of the components of machinery from the macroscopic world (e.g. cogs, shuttles, pistons etc). I aim to take these recently established results a significant step further; at Edinburgh I wish to take the understanding gained of how to control the mechanical motion in molecular shuttles and apply to produce systems that change MACROSCOPIC properties through molecular level mechanical motion."
