The goal of the project is to implement basic operations needed for quantum computation. For this purpose Calcium ions are trapped in a linear rf (Paul) trap and laser cooled to their quantum mechanical ground state. Research objectives are the investigation of different gates proposed for ion-trap quantum computers, their implementation and characterization, as well as their application for the study of fundamental issues of quantum mechanics. These studies are necessary for the realization and for the reliable operation of a future quantum computer. For these purposes we will adapt the existing apparatus. In particular, we will install an intensified CCD camera and a bichromatic light field. Furthermore, we have to optimize the EIT -cooling process. Simulations will provide the necessary understanding of the gate operations. After this preparatory work, we will be able to realize the gates. Special emphasis will be given to the gate fidelity of the realized gates in the presence of phonons in the ion string. In addition, we want to study the fidelity when various laser noise is present. These investigations are particularly interesting for realizations of reliable quantum computers. Finally, we will apply this knowledge and create Bell and GHZ states for fundamental research in quantum mechanics.
