The Manchester University Department of Earth Sciences is a long established centre for the study of minerals, rocks and natural colloids and fluids. Facilities for the analysis of such materials are amongst the best in the world with the new state-of-the-art electron Microprobe, electron Microscope, and X-ray diffraction equipment for the study of solids and ICP-MS, ICP-AES, HPLC and GC-MS for the study of liquids and organics. The national and international excellence of the work undertaken in the analysis of Earth (and environmental) materials is recognized by the hosting of the NERC National Centre for Microprobe Analysis and the recent award of major government funding to set up the first Centre for Research in Molecular Environmental Science in collaboration with the Department of Chemistry and the School of Biological Sciences. Research activities within the Department, and particularly involving the Physics and Chemistry of Minerals and Fluids Research Group, include the development of new approaches to the (micro) analysis of natural materials. Here the challenges are concerned with accurate analysis of small volumes of solids or very low concentrations of impurities in fluids. Postgraduate (doctoral) researchers are invited to apply to spend 12 months in the Department of Earth Sciences, Manchester University. These visiting postgraduates, who may be involved in developing and/or applying several of these powerful methods, will be highly qualified and motivated. Their research that may involve critically important materials brought from their own countries will provide training in the most advanced methods and results for publication in the major international journals.
