There are an average of 4 positions per year for 4 years commencing September 2001 offered in the Basin Dynamics and Tectonics Research Group in the Geology Department of Royal Holloway University of London under the European Community's Marie Curie Training Site scheme. Visiting fellows must be current Ph.D. students in a European university. The research, for an average of 6 months, will give the fellow the opportunity to obtain the necessary skills, listed below, in order to produce integrated basin studies to match the highest standards of actual exploration and basin research in both academia and industry.Key areas of research include:-Analogue, numerical, structural and stratigraphic modelling.-Processing and analysis of remote sensing, 3D seismic and geophysical data (potential fields, thermal)Sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy of carbonate platforms.-Geodynamic analysis of basin systems. Integrated analysis of field and 3D seismic data. As well as being tutored by high-level academic and industrial researchers, the research fellow will have access to internationally renowned analogue modeling laboratories and computing facilities of 11 workstations. These are used to run a wide variety of industry standard geological and geophysical software packages including up-to-date 2D and 3D seismic and well-log interpretation software. Other packages include image-processing software (ER Mapper and PCIsuite) used for satellite image analysis and visualization of interpreted seismic horizons, seismic visualization software (VoxelGeo), seismic processing software (FOCUS), 2D and 3D structural reconstruction packages (Geosec and2DMOVE). A number of stratigraphic and structural forward modeling programs developed in-house are also available. The principal staff members are: Professors Ken McClay , Dan Bosence and Robert Hall, and Drs. Chris Elders, Cindy Ebinger, Dave Waltham, Richard Gloaguen, Mary Fowler, Geoff Batt and Tim Dooley. Industry members from BP include Professors David Roberts and Jake Hossack. The Marie Curie Training Site scheme operates an equal opportunities policy, particularly between women and men. Interested Ph.D. students should contact: Professor K.R.McClay , Basin Dynamics & Tectonics Research Group, Geology Department, Royal Holloway University of London, Egham, Surrey, TW20 OEX, England.
