Analogs of astronomical objects can be made in Bose-Einstein condensates, for example optical or sonic black holes and analogs of Bose stars. Here one exploits the analogy of a moving medium with an effective space-time curvature or utilizes the unusual optical properties of Bose-Einstein condensates. Such objects offer unique opportunities to study the quantum properties of gravitational objects by drawing analogies. One of the most fascinating effects is Hawking's prediction of radiating black holes. I plan to study the theory of artificial astronomical objects. I will establish a first-principle quantum theory of light in moving quantum media. Armed with such a theory, I will try to obtain new insights into the mechanism of the Hawking radiation in accelerated media. Furthermore, I will compare the Bogoliubov theory of elementary excitations in moving Bose-Einstein condensates with the concept of Hawking radiation cultivated in the general-relativity community. This will shed light onto the physics of sonic black holes. At the University of St Andrews, I would continue to extend my work on the theory of Bose-Einstein condensates, drawing upon further interdisciplinary connections between BEC and general relativity. I will gain insight into the modern theory of general relativity by connecting it to my subject. I find the idea of artificial black holes truly fascinating - humble small droplets of very cold matter that may help us to understand better the connection between gravity and quantum mechanics, which is probably one of the greatest unsolved problems of modern physics.
