Накратко на български
Рекомбинацията на ДНК влияе върху еволюцията на генома при организми като плодовите мухи и растенията. Анализът на тези процеси помага да се разберат механизмите на естествения подбор в области от генома, където той действа слабо.

Цел на проекта
One of the challenging tasks given by the arrival of a complete genome is the detection of the genomic regions undergoing weak selection. This can only be done by comparative sequence analysis using bioinformatics tools to recover, store and analyze genomic data. According to population genetics models, the efficacy of natural selection is expected to vary with the recombination rate. The study of the impact of the recombination rate variations on the evolution of DNA sequences is thus required to detect regions undergoing weak selection. However, as we showed during my PhD, recombination has other neutral (= non selective) effects that could interfere with its role on selection efficacy. I propose to reevaluate the existent models of the recombination effects on genome evolution by taking into account these neutral effects. The modified models will then be tested with available genomic data from Drosophila melanogaster, Caenorhabditis elegans and Arabidopsis thaliana. This project involves bioinformatics, statistics and modeling approaches aimed at integrating and quantifying the effects of recombination on genome evolution. The scientific environment of the Charles worth's group is particularly adapted to this goal because they have a strong interest and experience on these topics. This will allow me to get population genetics skills in order to complement the genomic data analysis skills that I acquired during my PhD. For the host group, this will be the opportunity to get bioinformatics tools coming from the French group where I did my PhD. This will also allow fruitful scientific exchanges since applicant and host have different views about the effects of recombination on genome evolution.
