Накратко на български

Материалознанието изучава свойствата на веществата, като например разликите между кости, керамика и полимери. Обучението помага на изследователите да открият прилики между природните и инженерните материали, което развива областта на биомиметиката.

Final Activity Report Summary - NATURESMATSCI (Knowledge-Based Materials: Training Courses & Web Portal)

This activity supported a series of four summer schools on multidisciplinary materials science, attended by 176 people at all stages of their research careers, from first year PhD students to soon to retire Professors. Each year focused on one aspect of materials science: - 2005 Single phase materials, held in Hurtgenwald, Germany. - 2006 Composite and polyphase materials, held in Avdalen, Sweden. - 2007 Partially molten and amorphous materials, held in Estremoz, Portugal and, - 2008 Aqueous and porous materials, held in Trest, Czech Republic. The participants represented 44 countries (either by citizenship or current location). The summer schools were designed to help overcome the research barriers between groups focused on different materials (biocompatible materials, ice, rocks, ceramics, concrete, polymers, metals, bone, wood, silk), different approaches (theory, experiment, observation, simulation) and different scales (macro, meso, micro, nano). These Summer Schools, each lasting 10 days, offered young researchers: - Presentations by 15 different world-class materials scientists each year from all domains of materials science. - A combination of observational methods, experimental procedures, theoretical developments and simulation techniques. - A state of the art knowledge of the similarities and differences between natural and engineering materials and how this leads to the new field of biomimetics. - Insights into current research at a wide range of scales. - Training in Science and Society, Science Management and Scientific Communication. - Europe-wide contacts with researchers at all levels and from all materials science disciplines. In order to provide a wider access to researchers in the European Union, to showcase the research skills of the participants and to capture the training materials prepared by the invited speakers and participants, Prof. Paul Bons, Tubingen has combined the teaching materials and participant presentations developed for this course into a continuing Web Portal and CD-ROM resource. This resource currently includes 212 PDF format files available for open access download.

Цел на проекта

A series of four summer schools, each lasting ten days will be held in four member states between 2005 and 2008. Each year, this school will provide forty young European researchers with insights into the similarities and differences between natural and ma nufactured materials. In particular these Summer Schools will help early career researchers overcome the fragmentation in observational techniques, experimental procedures, theoretical developments and simulation techniques that have thus far developed in parallel, but in relative isolation, amongst the disparate materials science communities. Having actively participated in this summer school, these researchers will become confident in drawing upon and incorporating developments from across the entire mate rials community, regardless of whether the information relates to natural or manufactured systems. World-class researchers from all domains of materials science will be brought together to cross the boundaries between research streams. The syllabus will us e an integrated approach to materials, moving away from a tightly focused, materials-specific approach to the idea of a Materials Knowledge Lattice, where the three axes of Scale, Approach and Material encourage a cross-linked foundation for future researc h. In order to provide a wider access to researchers in the European Union, to showcase the research skills of the participants and to capture the training materials prepared by the invited speakers, the teaching materials developed for this course will be come available as a continuing Web Portal and DVD-Rom resource from 2005. Each year the summer schools will focus on one class of problems, so that by the end of the series of comprehensive and integrated online resource will have been created that will pr ovide the wider research community and nontechnical audiences insight into this subject, which is of recognised importance to the future of the European Union.
