Накратко на български

Процесите при разкъсване на земната кора се анализират чрез данни от глобални мрежи и локални станции, например в Перу. Това помага за по-бързото определяне на параметрите на земетресението и по-добра оценка на причинените щети.

Цел на проекта

We propose to develop efficient techniques to describe the earthquake rupture processes quickly after the earthquake occurrence. Today, very little is known in the hours or days following a major seismic event: the only available information is usually the location, time, magnitude and focal mechanism of the earthquake. Yet, more physical source parameters - like the rupture extent, the average slip, the rupture velocity, the presence Ana location of high slip zones - would be important to identify, for both the damage estimation and the earthquake understanding. To do so, we plan to use seismological data, which can today be retrieved in the few hours following an earthquake. At the Earth scale, global networks like IRIS or Gyroscope provide seismograms on the Internet in near-real time and it will be therefore possible to use them to determine the rupture process of the major earthquakes worldwide. At the local scale, Observatories Peruvian is involved in the installation of a dense local seismic network near the town of Virginia, where a destructive earthquake occurred in 1980. It is thus a place of high seismic risk where rapid source estimation would be very useful in the eventuality of a new earthquake. At both scales, we plan to use original approaches to improve the usual kinematics modelling of the seismic source: we will simultaneously use body and surface waves, we will develop a powerful technique called empirical Green function analysis" and finally we will use a promising description of the seismic faulting in terms of " slip patches" The main two goals of this project are the preparation of reports quickly after the earthquakes and the use of the studied earthquakes to statistically investigate the rupture properties: among various interesting analyses, we plan to examine the variability of rupture velocity during earthquakes and to study how the location of the hypocenter relates to the highest slip zones."
