Final Activity Report Summary - EDSVS (European doctorate in sound and vibration studies)

This Marie Curie EST project is concerned with the implementation of a European Doctorate in sound and vibration studies (EDSVS). A network of eight European Universities active in the field of Sound and Vibration offered doctoral training to students from Member and Associate States of the European Union and to students from third countries (ISVR Southampton UK, DIUF Ferrara I; KUL Leuven BE; TCD Dublin IRL; DTU Lyngby DK; TUB Berlin D; KTH Stockholm SE). Training was provided for all subjects related to acoustic noise and vibration. This programme followed an earlier four years programme under the same Marie Curie scheme. Thus, in all, the EDSVS programme has been active for eight years since 2000. Each doctoral student under this programme had a "Home Institute" and a "Hosting Institute", which jointly defined the doctorate programme; the supervision and support of the doctorate activity. Normally the main research activity was carried out at the Home Institute (about 70% of the doctorate duration) while the remaining work was carried at the Hosting Institute (about 30% of the doctorate duration). Both programmes awarded 63 fellowships with a total of 576 and 665 fellow-months respectively. Thus, in total, 126 young researchers have been trained by the eight Hosting Institutions. The training covered a total of 1241 fellow-months; in other words, more than 100 years of training in Sound and Vibration were offered! Students from nearly all EU member and Associate States have joined the programme (Austria, Belgium,Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Eire, England, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey). Also, students from the following third countries have joined the programme: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, India, Russia and USA. In summary 76.2% of the students are from EC Member States, 6.3% are from EC Associate States and 17.5% are from Third Countries. Of these, 77% have been awarded to male students and 23% to female students. During their visits, students have carried out projects in various fields related to sound and vibration. This has involved research in 1) physics subjects such as physics of acoustics, non linear dynamics and chaos theory; 2) mathematics and information sciences such as signals and speech processing, systems control modelling and neural networks; applied mathematics and mathematical physics 3) engineering sciences such as analytical vibration, numerical methods in vibration and acoustics, vibro-acoustics, fluid dynamics and aeroelasticity; acoustic and vibration measurements; 4) environment sciences such as noise pollution and 5) life sciences such as hearing and balance, biomedical signal processing and control, sound perception and psychoacoustics, human response to vibration. During this second EDSVS programme, a big effort has been made to launch the EDSVS PhD certificate which has been awarded to those PhD students who have carried out the PhD viva in accordance with the rules set by the 'Confederation of European Union Rectors' Conferences'. The award of the EDSVS certificates has been implemented via an innovative "electronic registrar" based on the EDSVS web page http://www.isvr.soton.ac.uk/edsvs/doctorate_certificate.htm. In parallel a dedicated Alumni web page site has been put in place. These pages are meant to provide information to Academic Institutions, Research Centres and Industry who are interested in learning more about the curricula of former EDSVS students.
