Final Activity Report Summary - KT-DIGICULT-BG (Knowledge transfer for digitisation of cultural and scientific heritage in Bulgaria)

Creation of methods for presentation and annotation of language corpora and for encoding of old Cyrillic and Glagolitic alphabets. Results: proposal for an old Cyrillic interpretation of the unicode Cyrillic code chart, and proposal to the unicode consortium for additions to the unicode Cyrillic code chart. Study of edutainment applications. Result: ideas for interactive games for cultural heritage presentation. Creation of methodology for intelligent search in collections of digitised manuscripts. Results: a software tool for entering and editing XML data and preparation of the first catalogue of Bulgarian manuscripts. Development of methods for document image enhancement, image matching and image recognition. Results: new techniques for recognition of typewritten texts which outperform existing methods despite their simplicity. Establishment of a national digitisation centre at the host institution. Joint work with the general department of archives. Results: release of a CD-ROM entitled 'Sofia. Religious spaces', electronic publishing of archive documents related to the temporary Russian governance (1878-1879), electronic archive of documents issued by the Bulgarian ministry of education in the 40ies and 50ies of the 20th century Creation of methods for quantitative study - Joint work with the scientific archive of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Results: creation and electronic publication of a digital archive of Marin Drinov, one of the founders of the academy of sciences, creation of collection of digitised newspapers from the period 1890-1930. It contained valuable documents, letters, personal notes and photographs. All of them were digitised and then prepared for electronic publishing. Thus scientific archives will become easily accessible both for the wide public and the researchers. Joint work with the central library of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Results: creation of collection of digitised newspapers from the period 1890-1930. Digitisation of mathematical publications of Bulgarian mathematicians. Results: digitised and prepared for integration within BULDML about 20 000 pages from mathematical journals, archives of the union of Bulgarian mathematicians and works of famous Bulgarian mathematicians. Digitisation of historical musical periodicals. Results: digitised and described in conformity with the Retrospective index of musical periodicals (RIPM) about 1 000 pages from various musical periodicals from the period 1891-1934. Joint work with the Institute for Bulgarian language on digital audio archives. Results: digitised, de-noised, and stored on digital recording media about 24 hours of records from the dialectological archive of Bulgarian language, creation of a Digital corpus of Bulgarian dialects (DCBD), which will be made available for phonological and linguistic research. Creation of photographic methods for modelling of small museum three-dimensional (3D) objects. Result: presentation of a historical monument (16 century church at Kremikovtsi monastery near Sofia). Development of a collection of historical photography. Result: creation of a digital collection of historical photographs of distinguished artistic and documentary value from and about Bulgaria. Joint work national library in Plovdiv. Result: digitised and prepared for publishing about 10 000 pages of early printed books from the library collection. Studies on digital preservation strategies. Results: Conclusions are drawn that physical sustainability could be addressed using well organised preservation based on systematic copy of materials and that file format changes should be on the future research agenda of the digitisation centre at IMI. Studies on digital library policy and quality issues. Results: Conclusions are drawn that policy should be incorporated in the architecture, implemented in functionality and should be clear to users because it affects their work with content and influences their perception of quality.
