Final Activity Report Summary - NOLCOS 2004 (6th Symposium on Nonlinear Control Systems - NOLCOS 2004)
The triennial conferences NOLCOS on nonlinear control systems are a well established and important forum in the field of research and development of technology for nonlinear control systems. NOLCOS symposia are worldwide acknowledged as the major international gathering of leading experts in the field of nonlinear control systems. With NOLCOS 2004, organised from 1 to 3 of September 2004 at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, this development was continued. The high-level scientific contents of NOLCOS 2004 were based on the know-how of the high-level experts in the program committee who were invited for the symposium. Based on the significant number of 355 submitted papers an attractive and state-of-the-art conference program with 247 selected papers could be established. In consequence, the high-level output and results of NOLCOS 2004 are summarised subsequently. NOLCOS 2004 was visited by 302 researchers from 40 countries, thus NOLCOS 2004 was a conference of striking international character. Researchers representing a huge number of nationalities with different backgrounds came together, exchanged their views and shared their knowledge. 87 young researchers took part in the conference with the help of the grant of the Marie Curie actions. 63 of them presented a paper either in an oral session or in the poster session. They had the chance to present their own work and discuss it with other participants and senior experts in the field. The participants were invited to visit a stimulating and high-level scientific program during the three conference days. Three plenary talks of internationally renowned experts of nonlinear control gave an overview on current research topics and new developments in the field. Prof. Andrew Teel of the University of California in Santa Barbara introduced new concepts on the topic Hybrid systems: generalised solutions and robust stability. Dr Kevin Wise of the Boeing Company gave a comprehensive overview of control applications in the aerospace industry in his talk Unmanned aircraft: the future in military aviation. Prof. Alexander Kurzhanski of the Moscow State University closed the series of plenary presentations with the topic Dynamic optimisation for nonlinear target control synthesis. To summarise the thematic development of the conference, the main theoretical focus of NOLCOS 2004 was lying on the topics of predictive control, flatness-based control, system identification, state estimation and stability theory. On the other hand, the large quantity of application-related talks made obvious the increased use of modern control methods in industry and practice. The application areas of automotive engineering, vehicle guidance, chemical engineering, mechatronics and power engineering were particularly popular. Moreover, presentations and experiments on the use of control methods in teaching delivered an appropriate addition to the scientific program. Prof. Dr Ing. Frank Allgöwer from the Institute for Systems Theory in Engineering at the University of Stuttgart chaired the International Program Committee, while Prof. Dr Ing. Dr. h.c. Michael Zeitz of the Institute of System Dynamics and Control Engineering at the University of Stuttgart chaired the National Organising committee. The VDI/VDE Gesellschaft Mess und Automatisierungstechnik, i.e. the Society for Measurement and Control within VDI and VDE, organised the administrative and financial issues as well as the production of conference preprints and print materials.

Цел на проекта
Non-linear control systems have been developed to a core field in control engineering with an advanced mathematical theory and many applications that place high demands on quality, productivity, precision and robustness. The need of non-linear control methods is related to thenonlinear behaviour of most technical and non-technical dynamical systems and processes, which have to be described by non-linear mathematical models. Acknowledged as the major international gathering of leading experts, industrialists and academics in the field of Non-linear Control Systems NOLCOS 2004 aims at strengthening contact between academia, especially young researchers and industry to build up new networks and cultivate existing relations. The mutual exchange within the conference will make an important contribution to promoting the future co-operation between sciences and industry on an international level and therefore strengthen the European Research Area. High-level speakers will expose the global spectrum ofNonlinear Control Systems, state-of-the-art situation and development directions. European R&Dorganisations as well as industry will benefit and find fresh impulses for reflection and innovation in vital field of European Economy. The NOLCOS 2004 is meant as a forum for young scientists such as graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral students from all over Europe. They are given the opportunity to introduce their research ambitions and their scientific work to an international expert audience, to learn about state-of-the-art topics and to engage into discussions with highly renowned researchers from academic and industry. Furthermore a large number of elements are especially dedicated to young researchers. Physicists and engineers need more than a solid basis in science and engineering. Structural changes in industry and globalisation of our world need creative and responsible young researchers. Standard engineering education at universe#
