Специални багрила се анализират чрез суперкомпютри, за да се разбере как един лазерен лъч може да управлява друг. Тези резултати помагат за разработването на бъдещи телекомуникации, които да пренасят много повече информация за единица време.

Final Activity Report Summary - SWITCHABLE DYES (Switchable chromophores for nonlinear optics)
The project deals with the computer simulation of a certain class of dyes which are of interest for the development of fast all-optical switching techniques. The optical properties of the dyes are studied at a molecular level with the aid of modern theoretical methods based on quantum mechanics, the so-called density-functional methods, using modern supercomputers. Within the project, we have shown that the optical dye properties can be changed and controlled by laser light irradiation alone. This means that these dyes in principle allow for the manipulation (such as switching-on and off) of one laser light ray by another laser light ray. We have also dealt with the question of how these optically active dye molecules can be transformed into materials with favourable properties such as mechanical and thermal stability, which is necessary for practical applications. The project thus provides basic research results which can aid the development of future telecommunication techniques which can carry much more information per time than presently possible.

Цел на проекта
The project deals with the investigation and design of chromophore systems for application in nonlinear optics which can be optically switched between two or more different states of activity. Selective switching as well as tuning the nonlinear optical act ivity will be made possible by well-defined structural modifications of the chromophore molecules. The effect of immobilisation at metal surfaces on the molecular response properties will be studied. To achieve these goals, time-dependent density functiona l theory will be employed in combination with standard and novel exchange-correlation potentials showing improved accuracy for the properties of interest. The proposal describes theoretical research in molecular chromophore design that will be of interest also to adjacent scientific disciplines such as applied physics, nanotechnology, and materials science. Following an initial mobility period, the project is part of a research programme that will help the researcher to qualify for a lasting scientific care er as university teacher and researcher in the country of nationality, thereby strengthening the European research area.
