Final Activity Report Summary - POLENZCO2 (Enzymatic polymerisation in supercritical carbon dioxide)
We describe the combination of enzymatic polymerisation and controlled free radical polymerisation in supercritical carbon dioxide. This combination facilitates the preparation of a range of block and graft copolymers, some of which cannot easily be obtained by conventional polymer synthesis. Biocatalysis in polymer science provides significant new opportunities and will open up a very broad range of new polymeric materials. We have presented the state-of-the-art concerning the synthesis of block and graft copolymer structures using dual / heterofunctional initiators, allowing the combination of mechanistically different polymerisation techniques in scCO2. In particular we have highlighted the use of enzymes for the production of polyesters coupled with free radical polymerisation techniques such as ATRP and RAFT. The combination of these techniques with scCO2 is attractive because of the elimination of the need for conventional solvents. Perhaps more importantly though, we have shown that scCO2 offers far more than just an environmentally-friendly solvent alternative, but rather that many synthetic processes work better in this solvent. Indeed, the simultaneous copolymerisation involving enzymatic catalysis presented here has, up till now, only worked successfully in scCO2. We believe that these strategies offer new opportunities in the design and application of functional polymeric materials.

Цел на проекта
This proposal is for a Fellowship for Dr. Silvia Villarroya to undertake high level research training and knowledge transfer in a world leading research group at the University of Nottingham. Silvia Villarroya is a talented young female organic chemist fro m a leading chemistry university in Spain. The proposal is targeted at the integration of enzymatic catalysis into the chemist's synthetic toolbox for the preparation of new functional polymeric materials in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2); an attract ive green solvent. Supercritical fluids are finding increasing application as solvents for chemical reactions. Key objectives are to investigate the scope and limitations of using enzymes for synthesis of polymers in this medium and to develop new enzymati c nanoreactors based on the immobilization of enzymes in polymeric scaffolds processed in scCO2. This project will yield new scientific breakthroughs which will have substantial benefits to Europe, for both industry and academia. Additionally the fellowshi p will include not only specific expertise from the Nottingham research group, but also career development through the University's graduate training programmes and courses which provide valuable leadership and communications skills for young chemists. Wit hout a Marie Curie Fellowship, this unique opportunity of research and training will be lost to Europe. She will bring very high quality expertise to the group and will gain from the unique expertise and skills that already reside in Nottingham in Supercri tical Fluids and polymer processing. This Fellowship will provide an important career development step for her, providing excellent training, and allowing her to test out her new ideas and to develop new science and expertise which she will be able to tran sfer back to Spain. This research will lead to cleaner and sustainable European polymer industry and will provide a route to new materials to keep Europe at the cutting edge of global research in polymers.
