Final Activity Report Summary - OPEN CLUSTERS (Detection and survey of pulsating stars in Open Clusters: a step forwards the Asteroseismology)

The study of OPEN CLUSTERS as associations of stars with same age, metallicity and distance provide us constrains in the stellar models. This is the crucial importance when our object of study is pulsating variable stars populate these clusters because they give additional information on the pulsation modes. In order to observe and to study a sample of open cluster with different physical properties we have acquired a 14-inch telescope and a CCD camera. This equipment will be installed this August. From the theoretical point of view, a new method for the identification of the pulsation modes in gamma Doradus variable stars has been obtained. This tool called frequency ratio method has been already applied to two field stars successfully and now we are going to experiment it in OPEN CLUSTERS with more of two or three gamma Doradus. The first cluster: Pleiades. In this period, the pulsating stars which will be observed by the space satellite Convection rotation and transits (COROT) have been already selected. Thanks to the ground-based multi-site campaigns carried out by international observatories where the Sierra Nevada Observatory belong to the Instituto de Astrofisica de Andalucia has participated actively. In this sense, the best scientific achievement performed by the stellar group has been the observation and study of the binary system HD172189. This star has been chosen as secondary target from a large list of candidates.

Цел на проекта

One of the great aims of the Stellar Astronomy is the knowledge of the processes that occur inside the interior of stars using the theoretical models. The pulsational behaviour of a star depends to a great extent on its interior structure and, therefore, the precise determination of the oscillations frequencies should provide us detailed information about the physical properties that govern their evolution. The asteroseismology, or stellar seismology, compares observed oscillations with the theoretical ones, limiting the number of physical parameters in the stellar models in their different evolutionary stages. The role of the Open Clusters, as stellar associations with a common origin, is fundamental. The physical properties shared by the members of a cluster: distance, reddening, age and metallicity, will provide very stringent constraints on the models, complementing the information obtained from the oscillation frequencies of the pulsating stars. Exhaustive studies on the incidence of variability and its behaviour, especially on the recently discovered. Doradus stars, will help us to know better some of fundamental parameters (Teff, logg, chemical composition and rotational velocity) of these stars. We will investigate if narrow relationships between the oscillation amplitude and stellar parameters such as the rotation occur, being this property of the most decisive factors in the pulsational behaviour. To reach the outcome of the project, systematic observations are necessary using CCD and photoelectric photometry on a large sample of clusters with a high number of objects on the lower part of the Instability Strip where pulsating stars like? Doradus, dScuti or solar-type are evolving.
