Final Activity Report Summary - AI4IA (Research Training in Artificial Intelligence for Industrial Applications)

The project's main objective is to build the capacity of young professionals to investigate, identify, demonstrate and promote Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques for industrial applications. Applications of AI in Industry can dramatically increase agility, speed and quality of the design, implementation and the control in industrial processes. At present, there is no systematic research and training approach towards the implementation of AI techniques in European industry. This is mainly due to the fact that there is a lack of integrated knowledge and skilled young engineers cross-fertilising AI techniques with other scientific fields applied in Industry. The AI4IA-project offers an extensive research-training programme to young research fellows who are trained for 36 months as PhD candidates, giving them multidisciplinary scientific and personal skills that will benefit their future careers in academic and industrial research. The research work in AI4IA is structured in several research clusters, namely: materials science, tribology, mechatronics, knowledge-intensive testing, and modelling and simulation. This research space covers a number of multidisciplinary scientific research topics, supervised by the participating organisations. It is a partnership between a number of leading European companies and universities that have a proven track record of successful AI research: - SKF Engineering and Research Centre, the Netherlands - Imperial College London, United Kingdom - l'Institut de l'Aéronautique et de l'Espace, France - University of Cambridge, United Kingdom - University of Twente, the Netherlands - Radboud University, the Netherlands - Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands - Lulea Technical University, Sweden - Hannover University, Germany - Trieste University, Germany - Ecole Centrale de Lyon, France and two associated partners: Politechnical University of Catalunya (Spain) and Linkoping University (Sweden). Using the novel techniques and power of AI, PhD students participating in the project work on a number of different topics, each of which gives the possibility of combining national research and academic investigations. The work undertaken by the researchers is dissimilated annually in PhD conferences and proceedings, which can be viewed online at the project's websites http://www.aiforia.com and http://www.aiforia.org. The work being done by fellows clearly shows that the best results are being achieved by adding an investigative soul to rational research.

The project offers an extensive research-training programme to 11 young research fellows who will be trained for 36 months as PhD-candidates. Applications of Al in industry can dramatically increase agility, speed and quality of the design, implementation and the control in industrial processes. However, currently there is no systematic research and training approach towards implementation of Al techniques in European industry. This is mainly due to the fact that there is a lack of integrated knowledge and skilled young engineers cross-fertilising Al techniques with other scientific fields applied in industry.The proposed training programme consists of the following 4 training elements:(i) pre-assessment phase;(ii) personal research training programme including scientific lectures and courses, seminars, workshops, complementary training, visits and conferences;(iii) progress monitoring of each fellow; and(iv) evaluation of the fellows on their performances.The research work in AI4IA is structured in 5 research clusters (themes), namely: materials science, tribology, mechatronics, knowledge-intensive testing, and simulation and modelling. This 5-dimensional research space covers 11 multidisciplinary scientific research topics, mobilising 11 fellows supervised by the participating organisations.The project consortium constitutes 14 partners from 8 Member States and 1 Associated State. Two industrial companies of which 1 is an SME and 12 universities are participating. The project co-ordinator is the SKF Research and Development Centre in the Netherlands. The A I4IA project will result in trained young professionals having multidisciplinary scientific and personal skills that will ensure their future careers in academic and industrial research.
