Накратко на български

Новата физика се търси чрез анализ на данни от експерименти при високи енергии. Това помага за по-доброто разбиране на фундаменталните закони, които управляват вселената.

Final Activity Report Summary - LUND-HEP EST (Training in experiment, phenomenology and technology transfer at the energy frontier)

The objective of the project was the formation of seven new researchers to their PhDs. Two of them had their degrees ready by the end of the project. One was anticipated finish by October 2010, one in December and the remaining three before summer 2011. These delays were normal for PhD studies. Moreover, seven early stage researchers (ESRs) employed by other institutes were detached to Lund for six months each. Their activity reports were submitted as part of P3 and P4 periodic reports of the project. The overall objectives as described in the contract were: 1. the creation of a web page for the project 2. teacher project based learning (PBL) training 3. the hire of seven long term ESRs in Lund by the 10th of January 2006 4. the preparation of the material for 60 ECT courses in PBL format 5. communication training 6. the provision of 60 ECT concluded courses 7. IPR and entrepreneurship training 8. the recruitment of eight short-term ESRs, which was partially completed since only seven were finally recruited 9. the participation in conferences, with all long-term ESRs participating in conferences, workshops and schools 10. leadership and management training 11. the completion of two research works for each long-term ESR, which was also almost completed. Six out of seven ESRs did two or more, while one had only completed one research work. 12. one research work for each short-term ESR 13. theses defence, which was almost completed with two being already defended, and the others being planned to be presented shortly after the project completion. Note that the seven long-term ESRs stayed while being financed by Swedish national funding. The main outputs from the seven long-term ESRs were the following: 1. they explored a methodology to search for new physics by looking at the angular distributions of dijets produced at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) large hadron collider (LHC). The method was applied on the data and showed that the known physics described very well the most common reactions. This offered great confidence in the ability to use this method to search for new phenomena. The sensitivity for such phenomena was estimated with computer simulations using a model with additional spatial dimensions at small distances, as an example. 2. they studied the possibilities of re-discovering the B(c)-meson, a composite particle made up of a heavy quark and another heavy anti-quark giving a unique window to study both the weak and strong interactions. The fellow also investigated with what precision we needed to understand the alignment of the thousands of detector modules in order to do this type of physics. These latter results on alignment performance paved the way for other LHC analyses depending on charged particles. 3. they explored the sensitivity for discovering a metastable particle, a R-hadron, at the LHC. No evidence of particles that passed the R-hadron selection criteria could be observed in the data sample analysed in the present work. The ESR also made the first measurements at the LHC on identified charged pion spectra at intermediate and high transverse momentum. 4. they simulated a detector determining the luminosity which was a measure of intensity for the colliding beams and provided the normalisation cross section measurements. It was now installed and operational. The fellow also compared simulation with real data to assess the performance. He implemented the detector in the ATLAS software framework; he developed and implemented a trigger simulation; he developed data driven and Monte Carlo methods to estimate acceptance and trigger efficiency. Theoretical work and computer simulation of collisions at the LHC was also performed and published in the following: 1. Multiple partonic interactions at the LHC. Proceedings, 1st International Workshop, MPI'08, Perugia, Italy, October 27-31, 2008. arXiv:1003.4220 (hep-ex) 2. Improved Parton Showers at Large Transverse Momenta. Submitted to European Physics Journal C, arXiv:1003.2384 (hep-ph) 3. Multiparton Interactions and Rescattering. JHEP 1001:035,2010. 4. Multiple Interactions in Pythia 8. arXiv:0901.2852 [hep-ph] 5. On the Massive O(N) Non-linear Sigma Model at High Orders. arXiv:1008.3499 [hep-ph] 6. Visible Effects of Invisible Hidden Valley Radiation. arXiv:1006.2911 [hep-ph] 7. Leading Logarithms in the Massive O(N) Nonlinear Sigma Model. Nucl.Phys.B827:237-255,2010. 8. Technicolor and other QCD-like theories at next-to-next-to-leading order. JHEP 0911:116,2009. 9. Techni-meson scattering in Technicolor and other QCD-like theories, which was under preparation by the time of the project completion.

Цел на проекта

This single-host programme aims to train 15 Early Stage Researchers, ESRs, in theoretical and experimental High Energy Physics, and/or inter-disciplinary technology transfer from High Energy Physics (seven ESRs for 36 months and eight ESRs from other institutions during shorter (~6 months) training placements in Lund). High-energy physics is the study of the fundamental constituents of matter and the forces that act upon them. This information is one of the basic pillars for our understanding of nature, the origin of the universe and the principles of physics. The experimental research training is with data from two complementary operational and two new facilities at the world absolute research forefront, the latter two will become operational during this programme. Examples of the available research training include searching for dark matter, signs of extra dimensions, physics with b-quarks, to explore quark gluon plasma and the physics-impact of detailed properties of the parton distributions. The theoretical programme includes the development of super symmetry scenarios giving multi-scale showers, where coloured short-lived particles undergo sequential decays, to improve estimates of asymmetries and widths necessary for CP violation measurements, and to exp lore the connection between diffraction, saturation and multiple scattering; much in close collaboration with the experiments. The training includes also inter-disciplinary activities focusing on applying the technology developed for High Energy Physics to bioimaging or to further applications in grid-computing.
