Final Activity Report Summary - CADRE II (Cardiovascular damage and repair II)

A total of seven PhD students were trained in this project. They worked on different research projects within the total framework of the Cadiovascular Research Institute Maastricht. Furthermore, they received a comprehensive training programme in cardiovascular biology and medicine. The results of the seven research projects were as follows: 1. the cardiac matricellular protein thrombospondin was proved to play an important role in the progression to heart failure 2. mechanisms of perpetuation of atrial fibrillation in chronically dilated atria were revealed 3. the role of notch signalling in collateral blood vessel formation was revealed 4. an unexpected pro-atherogenic effect of interferon-beta, despite its anti-inflammatory properties, was found 5. two types of transgenic mice were developed with pro-thrombotic and anti-thrombotic phenotypes 6. the role of phosphoinositide 3-kinase in thrombus formation was established 7. the contribution of collagen-adherent fibrogen to platelet adhesion under static and flow conditions in thrombus formation was shown.

Цел на проекта

The main objective of the Early Stage Training in the Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht (CARIM) is to train early stage researchers in cardiovascular sciences in a European and multidisciplinary perspective. The central hypothesis underlying the training programme is that cardiovascular diseases are the result of an interaction between genetic and environmental risk factors acting upon a system that as a part of the ageing process looses its adaptive potential. To address this hypothesis the fellows will perform research in the following closely related areas:- thrombosis and haemostasis;- the functioning of the normal and failing heart and on the possibilities for detecting and treating high risk cardiac patients (cardiac function and failure);- vascular biology and medicine of both large and small vessels. The project will train 7 early stage researchers in the field of cardiovascular diseases which are expected to lead towards 7 PhD degrees. The fellows will be trained by Universiteit Maastricht, CARIM.The training programme builds on the strength and infrastructure of CARIM's research program, which includes the basic science infrastructure of the Universiteit Maastricht, CARIM and the infrastructure for clinical research of the University Hospital Maastricht. Fellows will study and work in a cutting edge and international research environment. They will be exposed to both a basic laboratory and clinical setting of cardiovascular research. In addition, available expertise and equipment in the field of advanced biomedical engineering at the Eindhoven University of Technology will be integrated into the training programme.
