Final Activity Report Summary - MMBNOTT (Research training in mathematical medicine and biology at the University of Nottingham)

This project involved the training of Marie Curie fellows on the early stage training (EST) network 'Mathematical medicine and biology at the University of Nottingham' (MMBNOTT). The network was hosted by the Centre for Mathematical Medicine and Biology in the School of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Nottingham. The Centre comprises applied mathematicians and statisticians who, in collaboration with biomedical researchers, use mathematical and statistical methods to investigate a wide range of topics across biology and medicine. The MMBNOTT network was designed to provide fellows with a broad training in relevant techniques and methods in mathematics and statistics, as well as in relevant areas of biomedical science, in order to give them the breadth of experience to undertake interdisciplinary research at new interfaces later in their careers. Fellows also received training in transferable research skills and pursued an individual research project that combined deterministic and statistical or stochastic modelling addressing a problem of biomedical relevance. Each fellow established a personal career development plan and was granted Marie Curie status by the University of Nottingham. Moreover, each fellow was assigned three supervisors, i.e. an applied mathematician, a statistician and an experimentalist, who provided guidance through a three year research project. European mobility was promoted by drawing all fellows from outside the United Kingdom. The 10 research projects and fellows supported by MMMBNOTT, with their supervisors, are listed below. 1. Fellow (Nationality): Bagdasar, Ovidiu (Romania) Research Topic: Cell adhesion: stochastic receptor-ligand binding under force (Project P3) Applied Mathematics Supervisor: Prof OE Jensen Statistics Supervisor: Prof FG Ball Experimental Supervisor (Institute/School): Prof PM Williams (Pharmacy) 2. Цел на проекта

The Centre for Mathematical Medicine (CMM) at the University of Nottingham comprises a large group of applied mathematicians, applied probabilists and statisticians who undertake multidisciplinary research in a broad range of topics of relevance to the life sciences.Working closely with collaborators in biomedical disciplines based elsewhere at the University of Nottingham, this team is one of the largest groups of its kind in Europe. It undertakes internationally- leading research using a wide range of mathematical, numerical and statistical techniques.Funding is sought for 10 Fellows to come to Nottingham, each for a 3-year period, in order to undertake directed training in the application of mathematical and statistical methods to the life sciences. The training of each Fellow will include a substantial individual research project on a topic relevant to an area of molecular biology, cell biology, physiology, neuroscience, immunology or tissue engineering. Each project will be conducted under the supervision of two CMM members (ensuring that each Fellow develops skills in both deterministic and stochastic modelling approaches) and an experimentalist (ensuring that the project is highly relevant to the underlying biomedical application).Fellows will receive comprehensive training in relevant research methodologies and in generic research and transferable skills, through taught modules, taught courses, workshops, seminars and individual supervision.Fellows will work in a unique and stimulating research environment, which offers training that is both strongly multidisciplinary (through exploitation of a wide range of mathematical and statistical methods) and interdisciplinary (through close contact with experimental applications). The Programme will equip Fellows with the skills necessary to work at the interface between mathematical and life sciences in industry or academia, and promises exciting scientific advances.
