Final Activity Report Summary - ELC (Proposal for a doctorate in history, sociology and anthropology of legal cultures in Europe)
Le doctorat en 'Histoire, sociologie, anthropologie et philosophie des cultures juridiques européennes' a été conçu et mis en place dans le but de former une 'classe' de jeunes chercheurs, européens et extra-européens, capables de réfléchir au droit en se plaçant au-delà d'une position strictement dogmatique et positiviste. S'agissant d'un doctorat sur le droit plutôt que d'un doctorat de droit typique des facultés juridiques, nous avons gardé à l'esprit deux exigences majeures, l'approche pluridisciplinaire et le plurilinguisme, éléments incontournables d'une formation pédagogique intégrée. Dans ce but, nous avons conçu et mis en place une série d'outils scientifiques et pédagogiques: 1. séjour de chaque doctorant dans trois pays différents 2. double diplôme de doctorat 3. enseignements multidisciplinaires 4. échange scientifique constant entre la totalité des doctorants. Les résultats atteints sont été considérables. L'effet démultiplicateur des relations de travail a été assuré et la plupart des doctorants a participé de manière profitable aux activités scientifiques. Les doctorants ont attesté d'une maîtrise parfaite d'au moins trois langues entre l'anglais, le français, l'allemand et l'italien. Ils ont aussi bénéficié de contrats de cotutelle entre les institutions du partenariat. Les doctorants ont énormément progressé dans la manière d'aborder et d'analyser les problématiques juridiques. Ils ont participé activement à des colloques nationaux et internationaux et autres activités d'enseignement et ils ont publié sous forme différente leur recherche. A l'état actuel, nos doctorants et docteurs ont acquis une formation de haut niveau qui a permis à la plupart entre eux de poursuivre leur parcours de chercheur. Les bénéficiaires de cette formation ont désormais constitué un réseau de connaissance sur le monde juridique international liant l'Europe, le continent américain et l'extrême orient.

The project aims to offer European students of law, history of law and social sciences mobility scholarships for doctorates split among four locations (Paris, London, Frankfurt and Florence) at which the courses offered would complement each other perfectly. It is a matter of including legal thought, without renouncing anything of its distinctive rigour, in the present view of social sciences. All this training will benefit the multicultural environment ¿ English, French, German and Italian, which are among the main knowledge legal languages of Europe. We envisage setting up four centres funded by the European Commission: the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris (with Université Paris X Nanterre); the London School of Economics in London; the Max Planck Institut für Rechtsgeschichte in Frankfurt, and, Istituto di Studi Umanistici in Florence (with Scuola Superiore Santa Anna in Pise).These four centres would come together to organise a three-year, namely thirty-six month, doctoral course open to students with a first degree or equivalent qualification that entitles them to enrol for a doctorate. Seminars are organised in cycles of six semesters (two per centre). Each fellow will therefore have to spend one year in each of three out four funded centres. Within each yearly cycle, the respective universities will offer students tutoring lectures and seminars. Moreover some workshops will be organised plus a yearly summer school in Rome (Universita di Roma III), in order to comfort and discuss the works of the fellows.These studies will lead to the writing of a thesis under the supervision of at least two lecturers from the institutions involved. The practice of jointly supervised thesis will be systematised. We anticipate a doctorate recognised by all the participating institutions. The ideal is not merely to systematise joint supervision, but to arrive at a degree that will be recognised by all the institutions involved.
