Final Activity Report Summary - SIGNAL (Core signal processing training program)

Following the project overview as stated in the contract, the 'Core Signal Processing Training Program' (SIGNAL) project was aimed at providing in-depth training in signal processing. Hence, SIGNAL has implemented the training around three main activities: 1 : The PhD program The main way for SIGNAL to provide training was to offer PhD opportunities to the different fellows. In this perspective, among the 19 fellows recruited, only one had to resign. The others are either in the process of performing or finishing their PhD, three have defended and two have nearly finished. Moreover, thanks to the network-wide courses and events organised, the fellows have really made up a group spirit and continue to meet one another in the various conferences, on facebook and even on vacations. This group spirit, linked to the variety of topics covered (and detailed hereunder and in the annex pdf file), fostered interdisciplinarity and was instrumental in the success of the challenge event. The topics covered most of the topics presented in the proposal: - biomedical signal processing - digital communications (wired and wireless) - navigation - audio and speech processing - fundamental methodologies. 2 : The course and summer camp program Four technical courses were given to the fellows as network wide courses : - optimisation - inverse problems - blind techniques and tensors - adaptive filtering. One non-technical course was given as a network wide course: IPR and patents (given by the European Patent Office academy). One research management event was organised in the form of a challenge, i.e. the fellows were confronted to a challenge presented by industrials in a one week session. Groups of four fellows were formed, with different geographic and scientific backgrounds. During this first week, they worked together to start proposing solutions to the challenges, in the presence of the academic supervisors and of the industrial partners. Six months later, the fellows convened again and presented the final solutions to the supervisors and industrials. On top of these network wide courses, the students had to take both technical and non-technical courses locally. 3: The mobility program All fellows were offered a three months mobility, either in or outside of the consortium. Some went two times three months at other places. This was extremely useful, both for their scientific work and for building up their personal network.
