Final Activity Report Summary - BUDALGGEO (Algebraic Geometry)

Algebraic geometry and geometric topology are among the prestigious fields in mathematics. However in Hungary, the study of these subjects has been not part of the country's strong mathematical tradition. The main goal of the project has been fully achieved; namely, the progressing algebraic geometry and geometric topology group at the Alfred Renyi Institute of Mathematics in Budapest has been developed into a mature centre. In particular, the project contributed to the cohesion of the European research area. Substantial results have been obtained in the main themes of the project: 1) Arithmetic geometry: The theory of algebraic cycles and motivic cohomology 2) Singularity theory 3) Invariants of low dimensional manifolds. In addition many important results connect two topics from the above list. The various backgrounds of the members of research group have been effectively amalgamated, thereby providing fruitful cross-fertilization. How high the quality of these results is shown by the fact that many of them appears in top mathematical journals, like Duke Mathematical Journal or Crelle's journal. All together the project has substantially increased the potential of the European Research Area.

Algebraic geometry is one of the most prestigious fields in mathematics. However in Hungary, the study of this subject has not been part of the country's strong mathematical tradition. Recently a research group in the area has been formed at the host by internationally recognized researchers of the younger generation who studied in the great mathematical centres of the world.The main reason for carrying out the Transfer of Knowledge project is to develop the progressing algebraic geometry school into a mature centre. This way it contributes to the cohesion of the European research area insofar the existing disequilibrium in directions of research in Central Europe and in the EU will be eliminated. The Renyi Institute provides a friendly and stimulating atmosphere for research, which encourages the participation of both genders.In addition various EC funded conferences and Workshops demonstrate the ability of the algebraic geometry group to organize mathematical life in a way that knowledge reaches the interested scientists. Extensive scientific exchanges with European centres have been greatly accelerated by the FP5 grant Centre of Excellence. The ToK project would provide the opportunity to continue the highly successful CoE project.In order to solve various recent problems in algebraic geometry, it is essential to combine ideas from different sub-fields. One of the strength of the algebraic geometry group at the host is that its members' backgrounds are rather different, therefore the group is an ideal centre for transferring and amalgamating knowledge of various related areas.In addition the group is working in close collaboration with experts from neighbouring fields such as theoretical physics, combinatorics, differential topology, symplectic geometry and complex analysis, thereby providing fruitful cross-fertilization. In this respect the proposed ToK project can substantially increase the potential of the European Research Area.
