This proposal is focused on More Efficient Cancer Therapies, topic of fundamental importance in the European Research Area and with high social impact worldwide. The Primary Scientific Aim of this proposal is to develop an efficient method for selective tumour delivery and cellular internalisation of therapeutic agents capable to modulate the activity of Bcl-2 proteins inducing apoptosis of tumour cells. This involves tackle an intracellular delivery problem of global importance in cancer therapy, which can be addressed by conjugation of the therapeutic agent through a rationally designed biodegradable linker either to a Trojan peptide" or to a water-soluble polymeric carrier, working in this case within the novel area of Polymer Therapeutics. This research topic falls completely into the interface of polymer chemistry and the biomedical sciences and will hopefully give rise in the 21st century to a second generation of anticancer therapies with improved characteristics, higher tumour selectivity, higher efficiency and reduced systemic side effects. Polymer Therapeutics is a new area of research in the host institution, the CSAT at Valencia, applicant's region of origin, and almost unknown in Spain. Therefore, development of this proposal offers a highly innovative research approach, increasing the attractiveness and competitiveness of the host institution and Spain, contributing in this way to the European research excellence. The CSAT is born devoted to reach the highest standards in basic research and to explore its putative industrial applications in order to improve the quality of life and health of the community. Its aims together with the advanced multidisciplinary training offered by the host institution not only will reinforced the applicant's scientific knowledge but will give her the necessary management skills to reach professional maturity and become independent researcher in cancer research field, settling the basis of a promising future career."
