Цел на проекта
Energy is vital for all aspects of modern life and the security of energy supply has always been of strategic importance. Needless to say, the issues of energy are of critical importance in economic, environmental and social terms for sustainable development. However, the broad outlook at energy security has dramatically changed during the past few years because of a range of issues: Oil price spikes and sharp increase in gas prices; the impact of the oil products blockade in late 2000; the crises of electricity supply in North America and in parts of Europe; the expectation of dependence on future large-scale imports; and recently the threat of terrorism. All these factors stress the need to rethink our strategies towards secure energy systems. Despite of t he EC's vested interests in securing energy systems (Green paper on energy) and efforts conducted by various governments, academic and other research institutions on exploring ways to safe and reliable deliverance of energy, unfortunately, little work has been carried out so far to find the alternatives to existing schemes in insuring security of energy systems. Renewable sources of energy had been the spotlight of energy future debate for a long time now for being environmentally benign and sustainable sources. This project endeavours to extend their role by exploring their rational contribution in preserving the security of energy systems. The project will focus on the preparation of a descriptive map of the various risks to a secure energy future for Europe in the medium to long-term horizons and aims at developing a methodical framework for quantifying the security of energy system. The outcome of this research project will provide planers and policy makers with a structured approach to realize the impact of renewables as well as other components of the energy systems on the overall system's security, enabling them to make more informed and conscious decisions leading to a secure and reliable energy future.
