Final Activity Report Summary - NICE (Network for Ice sheet and Climate Evolution)
The outcomes of the project are two-fold: a better understanding of glacial/interglacial periods of the past, with emphasise on the de-glaciation and abrupt events. The major publication derived from the project provide new scenario to capture the huge variability associated to the de-glaciation. On the other hand the project copes with the future of Greenland and Antarctica ice sheets with emphasise on Greenland melting.

Цел на проекта
The concern for climate change is not limited to small groups of scientists. The demand is strong, from the general public, stakeholders, policy makers, to know more about the future of the Earth's climate. It is important, for our scientific community, to bring the most reliable answers to these questions. This can only be achieved through the development and careful validation of comprehensive Earth System Models, because each component of the climate system (atmosphere, ocean, sea-ice, ice-sheet, vegetation) is playing a role in climate changes, though with different response time scales.Our network is therefore based on the best existing modelling laboratories in Europe that are involved in climate change, using a variety of different climate and ice sheet models. Besides the Earth Science modelling teams (CEA-LSCE, UNIBE-CEP, UiB-BCCR, UREAD, UBRIS, UCL-ASTR) and the Ice sheet modelling and remote sensing ones (VUB, CNRS-LGGE and CNRS-LEGOS, UBRIS), our network also includes very good expertise on past climatic data, in particular from three main sources: the Ocean (CEA-LSCE, UiB-BCCR), the current Ice sheets (UCopenhagen, CNRS-LGGE, UNIBE-CEP) and also from the continent (AMU).We are currently lacking of scientists trained in this multidisciplinary approach and the first aim of NICE is to train the new generation of scientists in this way. But given the demand from different actors of our society, it is also essential for this new generation to be able to clearly convey the causes of the predicted climatic evolution. Thus, NICE is designed to give the opportunity to these scientists to acquire the competence of communicating their results outside the scientific sphere. CLIMPACT company, in order to convey academic results of the research developed within NICE to the industrial and financial worlds. CLIMPACT will also be very helpful to train ER and ESR to communicate with this sphere.
