Накратко на български
Математически методи за обработка на медицински изображения се прилагат за по-добро проучване на мозъка, например при шизофрения. Тези инструменти помагат за разбирането на заболяването и могат да се използват при диагностика на други органи.

Final Activity Report Summary - MAMIP (Mathematical Methods in Medical Image Processing)
We have developed new mathematical methods for medical imaging in this project. To focus our efforts, we have defined a set of key problems in brain research including schizophrenia as the initial Driving biological problems (DBPs) for our work at the Technion. Schizophrenia is a multi-faceted illness affecting 1 % of population in Western Europe and consuming a significant portion of the healthcare budget; yet the science of schizophrenia is only now beginning to take concrete form, primarily because neuroimaging techniques are just now providing a detailed picture of the structure of living brains and tracking the way those brains function in controlled experimental settings. These sophisticated images - time varying, multi-spectral, scalar and vector-valued - are fruitful ground for computing because the patient's anatomy forms a three dimensional coordinate system in which to accurately register and combine the multiple sources of information. In addition to making important contributions to the understanding of schizophrenia as an illness, we believe that the richness of the schizophrenia problem domain has driven the creation of computational tools and techniques with broad and significant applicability to many important areas of image-based biomedical computing both within the brain and in other organs.

Цел на проекта
Mathematical models are the foundation of biomedical computing. Basing those models on data extracted from images continues to be a fundamental technique for achieving scientific progress in experimental, clinical biomedical, and behavioral research. This project is dedicated to promoting the advancement of medical image computing which will have broad and significant impact on the biomedical community. Images, acquired by a range of techniques across all biological scales, are central to understanding biological problems and their impacts on human health purely because images now encompass so many techniques beyond the visible light photographs and microscope images of biology's early years. Today, imaging is better thought of as geometrically arranged arrays of data samples measuring such diverse physical quantities as time-varying hemoglobin deoxygenation during neuronal metabolism or vector-valued measurements of water diffusion through and within tissue. The broadening scope of imaging as a way to organize our observations of the biophysical world has led to a dramatic increase in our ability to apply novel processing techniques and to combine multiple channels of data into sophisticated and complex mathematical models of physiological function and dys function. The goal of our work is to create, develop, integrate and deploy computation tools for the analysis and visualization of medical image data. A central issue is to create and evaluate computational methods to extract this range of structures from medical image data, robustly and accurately. This will require novel segmentation and registration tools that incorporate statistical information on tissue response, structural information on expected spatial layout of structures (e.g. atlases), shape information on expected geometric appearance of structures, and system constraints on location, structure and shape of anatomical regions.
