The overall objective of the project is to develop a new way of processing natural fibre reinforced composite materials. Different methods of modification of natural fibres (mainly cellulose and chitin) will be developed to give rise to thermoformable composites with less than 40% matrix material and constituted of virtually all renewable components. Natural fibres from different sources will be submitted to chemical surface modification using grafting agents bearing a reactive end group and a long plasticizing tail. The general objective of this modification is to increase the apolar character of the fibre to improve its compatibility with the composite polymer matrix. Ultimate success will result in a polymer matrix solely constituted of the long inter-diffused plasticizing tail ends, effectively guaranteeing perfect adhesion between fibres and polymer matrix, and having composite materials with high fibre contents. Our originality consists of transforming the natural substrate (fibre) into a co-continuous modification through in depth modification of the fibre wall. These biocomposite materials, based on fully renewable materials, will be processed by classical methods such as hot-pressing, extrusion, injection moulding and thermoforming and critical parameters will be studied. The composite samples will be characterized for their thermal, mechanical and hygromechanical characteristics in both the linear and non-linear domains. Material properties will further be correlated with the source of the natural subs trate and its ultra-structure, nature of the chemical modification and processing parameters.
