Накратко на български

Системата за събиране на данни от калориметъра TileCal обработва огромни потоци информация, например енергията при сблъсъци на протони. Това позволява бързо и точно разпознаване на важни физични събития в Големия адронен колайдер.

Цел на проекта

The ATLAS experiment is a large detector for the study of high-energy proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), presently under construction at the European Organization for Nuclear Research CERN, and scheduled to start operation in 2007. At the LHC collisions are produced at a rate of 40 MHz. Real time computation of some fundamental magnitudes with data flows of 200 Gbytes/s (e.g. the energy deposition) must be performed to provide much precise information to the further steps of the on -line event selection. The present proposal aims at a major contribution to the development, and implementation of the back-end and read-out system of the Tile Hadronic Calorimeter of the ATLAS detector. The conclusion of the work will be the commissioning of the entire back-end readout system (9000 readout channels, 70000 MIPs) of the Tile Calorimeter and its validation with early LHC data. The design of the different components is now in the pre-production stage. However, investigation of key elements is mandatory for the successful completion of the project and the full exploitation of the detector discovery potential. For the next two years, the full integration of the readout system must be performed, and the energy and collision time computation must be implemented and validated taking into account the high rate environment with maximum allowed latencies of 10 micro seconds. The applicant will play a leading role in the commissioning and integration of the TileCal readout system, its validation with early data, and the development of the on-line algorithms for energy and time computation. This project will provide him a challenging training in high rate data acquisition systems, and a superb basis for the exploitation of the ATLAS detector. Working in an international laboratory will be also highly beneficial for him. He would be able to discuss with scientists and engineers who would provide him state-of-the-art expertise in the field.
