Накратко на български

Молекулярната епидемиология изследва връзката между излагането на химикали и развитието на рак в силно замърсени региони. Тези данни помагат да се разбере как околната среда влияе върху появата на онкологични заболявания.

Final Activity Report Summary - MOLEPI (Restoration of molecular epidemiology research in highly polluted region of Upper Silesia, Poland)

The aim of the project was to restore molecular epidemiology research at Maria Sklodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer Center and Institute of Oncology, Branch in Gliwice, Poland, after Dr Grazyna Motykiewicz returned from United States (US) to Poland and her home institution. Since 1989, Dr Motykiewicz was involved in a joint molecular epidemiology research with scientists from different laboratories both from EU countries and US. During this time Dr Motykiewicz was periodically working outside of Poland as a fellow and eventually she held a permanent position at Columbia University. After coming back to Poland, Dr Motykiewicz decided to continue molecular epidemiology research at Maria Sklodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer Center in Gliwice. This project was planned to include: (a) the follow-up studies based on retrospective data on volunteers previously taking part in the molecular epidemiology research performed in Gliwice between 1989 and 1995; (b) the new case-control studies using samples collected from patients hospitalised and treated at Maria Sklodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer Center and cooperating hospitals; (c) organisation of bio-bank for storing biological samples collected for future molecular epidemiology and other ex vivo research. Ad.(a). The planned study had been performed and obtained data indicated causative relation between chemical exposure and cancer development. The results of the study were presented at the conference 'Frontiers in cancer prevention research', 12-15.11.2006, Boston, US. Ad. (b). Laboratory of molecular epidemiology has been organised where new case-control studies were planned. Ad. (c). The conceptual and organisational framework for the Silesian bio-bank had been created, including preparation of business plan and feasibility study for building up the facility. Activities initiated during the MOLEPI project (molecular epidemiology studies and organization of Bio-bank) are continued in the host institution, Maria Sklodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer Center and Institute of Oncology, after the project termination.

Цел на проекта

The aim of the proposal is to obtain funding for restoring molecular epidemiology research previously performed in the Institute of Oncology in Gliwice, Poland. The molecular epidemiology merges molecular biology techniques with epidemiologic methods in order to use biomarkers in human tissues as indicators of potential risk of cancer and other genetic-based diseases. The use of biomarkers allows for better understanding of environmental causes of diseases, an early detection and prevention as well as for better treatment of the disease.Since 1989 till 1997 the molecular epidemiology projects were successfully run in the Institute of Oncology in Gliwice in cooperation with Columbia University (US) and six top European laboratories from Finland, The Netherlands, Norway, Germany, Great Britain and Sweden. These studies were focused on the estimation of genetic damage caused by environmental factors. Obtained results have clearly shown that polluted environment has a potential carcinogenic impact on human health. The results were published, between 1990 and 2001, in a series of 26 original papers. Here we propose to renew the molecular epidemiology research in Gliwice starting from the follow-up studies on previously evaluated populations. At the same time we will assess the predictive value of the biomarkers, which were developed to evaluate the risk of cancer. We also plan to start the new biomarker studies performed as a hospital-based case-control research. To facilitate the molecular epidemiology studies, we will create the Bio-bank (Silesian Bio-bank") for storing and processing human samples to be used in ex vivo research. This facility is necessary for our scientific projects but also it will serve other Polish and foreign institutions. The Bio-bank create d in Poland could be a meeting spot for scientists from United Europe, performing molecular epidemiology studies."
