Final Activity Report Summary - SemanticMM4U (Emergent Semantics in Personalized Multimedia Content)
Support for personalised multimedia content has become a crucial aspect of modern multimedia applications. We can find many different systems and approaches that provide multimedia content which is tailored to the specific needs and requirements of the users. These systems and approaches exploit semantically-rich information for the multimedia content creation task. However, once the content is created, this very valuable source of information is thrown away. Thus, it is lost for any further processing of the created multimedia presentations. Systems that analyse such presentations can only revive a very limited amount of the semantic information that was initially available and utilised. Consequently, with the SemanticMM4U framework we presented an approach that enhanced the state-of-the-art by providing support for deriving semantics at any point in time during the assembly process and integrating it into the syntax of the final presentation formats. By this, the semantics was made machine-readable and machine-processable. It therefore allowed for a better indexing retrieval, and processing of multimedia presentations.

Authoring of personalized multimedia content can be considered as a process consisting of selecting, composing, and assembling media elements into coherent multimedia presentations that meet the user's or user group's preferences, interests, current situation, and environment. In the approaches we find today, media items and semantically rich metadata information are used for the selection and composition task. However, most valuable semantics for the media elements and the resulting multimedia content that emerge with and in the authoring process are not considered any further.This means that the effort for semantically enriching media content comes to a sudden halt in the created multimedia document - which is very unfortunate. With SemanticMM4U, we propose an integrated approach for deriving and exploiting multimedia semantics that arise with and from the creation of personalized multimedia content and make it available for further use and applications. In this approach, not only the metadata are considered that are semantically evolving from the media elements of the newly created presentation.Also the actual usage of media elements for the authoring can emerge new semantics for these media elements employed. By bringing the emerged multimedia presentation semantic to the users, the envisioned research project provides for a better search and retrieval of such semantically enriched multimedia content.
