The research project deals with black holes that are the fundamental objects in any quantum theory of gravity. The project will be in superstring theory where black holes are specific string states. It has been recently noticed that for a specific class of supersymmetric four-dimensional BPS black holes of type II string theory one can match the (microscopic) statistical entropy and the (macroscopic) geometric entropy by modifying Hawking's entropy formula due to specific R^2 terms and by considering a very specific thermodynamical ensemble. There is also a close relation to topological strings as for these black holes the partition function can be expressed as a product of topological and antitopological string partition functions. The research project consists of four parts.- It will first analyse the effect of more general higher derivative corrections in the given framework using the same techniques as in the known example.- Second, it will analyse if one can extract similar results for more general black holes. This may require the development of a new formalism generalizing the N=2 formualism of the known example.- Third, the relation of these black holes to the topological string will be analysed. Known techniques of topological string theory will be used for this.- Finally the consequences of the results on other fields in theoretical physics and mathematics will be discussed. Particular interest will be in cosmological considerations. The project will allow the researcher who is experienced and among the most promising in his generation in his field to undertake a transnational mobility to DAMTP of the University of Cambridge (UK) and it will contribute to the transfer of research competencies.
