This project provides advanced training that will both refine and broaden the applicant's scientific, management, and organizational capabilities, thereby enabling him become an independent supervisor in high-level European scientific or technological centres.Through the planned training he will become a skilled expert in mechanical spectroscopy and analytical electron microscopy, including more specialized techniques such as electron back-scattering diffraction and large-angle convergent beam electron diffraction. The experienced supervisor with productive international research programmes and the quality facilities available at the host group guarantee that the applicant will become a highly qualified and recognized researcher in the high-damping materials field. The young candidate has an outstanding academic career and integrates well with people from different cultures. This makes him a valuable participant in multicultural teams. The project's scientific objective is to develop new composite materials based on Cu-Al-Ni shape memory alloys for high-damping applications. Such alloys are 'smart materials', which are prominently featured in Area 3 of the 6th Framework Programme. This new composite material is based on the scientifically promising combination of a high-percentage preform of shape memory alloy powder particles, which is responsible for the high damping, and a low-melting metallic matrix filler (In, Sn, In+Sn), whose main function is the cohesion of the preform powder. Our idea is radically different from the traditional solutions used for high-damping materials and we expect that the development of these kinds of composite materials, which do not currently exist on the market, will create innovative damping solutions for several industrial applications (e.g. acoustic pollution, high-precision instruments). These efforts aim to reduce the gap in the number of patents in the high-damping sector between Japan (85 %) and Europe (7 %).
