Цел на проекта
The project 'Russia and her Borderlands in Historical Perspective' will examine the relationship between Russia and three of her neighbours - Estonia, Ukraine and Azerbaijan - over three time periods, and will analyse the relevance of the historical relationship to the present.The three time periods to be analysed are 1957-64, when the relationship between the USSR and its republics underwent a partial decentralisation, 1987-1994, when the USSR disintegrated and relations were established on a new footing in the transition, and 2000-2005, when the policies of the Russian Federation began to focus more on strengthening the Commonwealth of Independent States in the former Soviet space.The research will involve detailed exploration of the economic and day-to-day relationships. Historical techniques and social scientific methods in international relations and economics will be applied.The researcher, Dr. Jeremy Smith - a historian - will be based at the Estonian School of Diplomacy in Tallinn for two years. He will undergo training in research methods in international relations, diplomacy, and international economics, and will acquire a deeper knowledge and understanding of East European research approaches as he conducts his research. He will develop his knowledge of Russian and learn Estonian.The research itself will contribute to our understanding of the development of cross-border relations in a region of major importance to the EU, and will promote international collaboration and exchange of ideas, as w ell as contributing to the professional development of the researcher by broadening his disciplinary horizons and his regional perspectives.
