Conceptual representations are at the heart of mental life, involved in every aspect of our cognitive functioning; they allow us to see the world as a structured environment populated by meaningful objects rather than an array of raw perceptual information, to imagine and reason about these objects when they are no longer present, to communicate with others about them, and to interact with them in appropriate ways. Recent advances in brain imaging techniques allow us to revisit this classic issue with renew ed potential for significant advances in understanding the neural processes used to decode perceptual inputs and imbue these with meaning.The proposed research project will employ a novel, neurocognitive approach combining a well-researched cognitive mode l of conceptual knowledge with a neurobiological model of a hierarchical object processing system, and use cognitive psychological paradigms in functional neuroimaging experiments to test its central claims. The combination of detailed cognitive theory and a neurobiological model of object processing allow the testing of more specific hypotheses about the neural bases of conceptual object knowledge than has been possible in earlier studies. Specifically, the proposed experiments will explore how perceptual and conceptual processing of objects in the ventral stream is modulated by cognitive conceptual variables. This research will increase our understanding of the neural foundations of perceptual object processing and its transition into meaningful object representations.
