The objective of the project is to map the functional activation of cortical substructures in the human visual cortex in vivo for the first time. This shall be achieved by utilizing recent advances in MR imaging technology, namely the use of an ultra-high magnetic field strength (7 Tesla) to increase functional contrast and a parallel imaging approach to speed up data acquisition, in combination with a new functional magnetic resonance imaging method susceptible to venous vessels, dubbed functional MR venography (fMRV). The training aspects involve a very complex methodological part and a highly demanding functional neuro-imaging part. The methodological training aims to accumulate and broaden the expertise regarding these novel promising MR technologies (i.e. parallel imaging at ultra-high field strengths) within the EU to keep up with the current technological forefront in this area. Training in the functional neuro-imaging part will focus on the primary visual cortex (V1) as much is known regarding its cortical architecture. The aim is to demonstrate that the proposed method is capable of mapping functional activation in distinct cortical layers - this shall be demonstrated using spatial averaging of cortical profiles perpendicular to the cortical surface; success in this part would demonstrate for the first time that fMRV at 7 Tesla is able to determine whether activated cortex is primarily receiving input (layer IV) or generating output (layer II) or both. Studies of brain networks would benefit immensely from such a direct mapping of in- and output. We also aim to map blobs and inter-blobs which are even smaller intra-cortical subunits in cortical layers II-III of V1 showing different metabolic demand and vascular architecture. Both parts involve complex image processing, i.e. segmentation of MR data sets and subsequent cortical flattening as well as analyzing the fMRV data sets in the temporal domain.
