Накратко на български

Дигиталната холография изследва начини за заснемане и показване на 3D обекти чрез мобилни устройства. Това помага за създаването на нови приложения и методи за обработка и защита на триизмерни данни в малки устройства.

Final Activity Report Summary - HOLOMOBILE (Digital holographic applications for mobile devices)

Digital holography is an emerging technology for the sensing and display of real-world three-dimensional (3D) objects and scenes. The longstanding foundations of the subject, classical holography, are well researched and well understood. However, with software representation of a hologram (a digital hologram) comes new possibilities (such as image processing of the 3D data) and new unsolved challenges (such as how to extract 3D data from the hologram). This project concerned the initial stages of a long term effort to combine digital holography 3D imaging technologies with mobile devices, thus opening up a range of novel applications. The results are at several levels, from the theoretical through algorithm and prototype design, to application evaluation. Specifically, hologram-capture architectures have been designed and tested that would be suitable for the restricted footprint associated with mobile device implementation. These architectures necessarily incorporate trade-offs that limit functionality and quality. As such, novel and specialised algorithms are required to compensate and make the captured data usable, and to interpret the 3D data within. Optical processing and parallel processing of the 3D data was considered to reduce the sequential computational overhead. One major focus of the project concerned content protection and digital rights management for the sensed 3D objects. Ultimately, this project led to the first reported techniques for porting 3D holographic information to conventional mobile devices and evaluating its 3D properties. Much of the gained knowledge is exploited as part of a three-year eight-partner European Commission funded collaborative project called Real 3D that has evolved from this project.

Цел на проекта

Digital holography is an inherently three-dimensional (3D) technique for the recording, analysis, and display of real-world objects, and is unrivalled in high-end industry for non-contact inspection of precision components. Many existing 3D imaging techniques are based on the explicit combination of several 2D perspectives (or light stripes, etc.). The advantage of holograms is that multiple 2D perspectives can be optically combined in parallel, and in a constant number of steps independent of the hologram size. The advantage of a digital representation of holograms is that they can be processed, analysed, and transmitted electronically. As a generalisation of conventional images, digital holograms have greater potential for wider society than high-end industry. The applicant expects that scientific advances in digital holography could be made relevant to society if its promising capabilities could be harnessed for inexpensive mobile technologies. The objectives of this research are:(i) to adapt digital holog ram technology for mobile devices to admit applications that are useful to society, and(ii) invent some of these applications. The applicant has pioneered the basic research of processing (compression, encryption, noise removal) and analysis (3D occlusion extraction) of 3D real-world objects encoded in digital holograms. He will travel to the University of Oulu, Finland, to learn new skills of applied research and industry collaboration, gain expertise in the field of mobile and wireless technologies (in which Oulu is internationally renowned), and learn how to develop technology that can enrich people's lives.
