In recent years, computer software has been developed for, and deployed, in ever more sophisticated situations. Increasingly, however, there is a problem concerning the trustworthiness of such software. For example, can we be sure what individual components or services are doing for us? Can we be sure what large groups of such services do? And, once these services are distributed, for example across the Internet, can we be sure that communication between them (and us) is secure? Without answers to these questions, we will remain unwilling to trust autonomous software in critical applications.The aim of this project is to develop and utilise the novel reasoning and verification techniques developed in Liverpool in order to provide techniques for the formal verification of trusted systems. These logical techniques analyse the behaviour of software and can be used to ensure predictability. Yet, these techniques remain to be applied in important areas. Thus, the project will bring important expertise in these application areas to Liverpool, allowing the verification techniques to be modified and adapted for use in these key areas. These areas are selected in such a way as to provide a key step towards the long-term goal of fully verifying trusted systems.
