Plasma based surface engineering is a critical component in many technologically advanced industries.Traditional plasma coatings have involved the fragmentation and re-assembly of gaseous precursors in the plasma system and this limits the chemistry available in the coating. Recent academic research has lead to the development of advanced coating systems that promote a soft polymerisation reaction which does not fragment the precursor.This opens up a new horizon in terms of surface engineering capabilities. However, the understanding of these new polymerisation systems is inadequate and this is limiting the penetration of this exciting technology. In this project, a systematic study of the reactions within such plasmas will be carried out.This research will involve cross-disciplinary interaction of plasma physicists, polymer chemists, surface scientists and bio-engineers with a view to developing a functional model of the soft polymerisation process sufficiently powerful to enable the development of new product paradigms in key enabling industries.A key objective is to maximise the impact fan out across multiple industry segments. The overall outcome will be a step change in the surface engineering capabilities on offer to European industry and the opening up of a wide variety of new commercial possibilities for exploitation
